POR QUÉ EL DÓLAR SE FORTALECE HISTÓRICAMENTE FRENTE A OTRAS MONEDAS?

Desde el final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial hasta el día de hoy, a pesar de algunas fluctuaciones y el declive en el estado de la economía estadounidense, el dólar sigue siendo la principal moneda mundial. Al menos tres factores explican esto: las reservas de divisas, los contratos de productos básicos y las transacciones financieras internacionales.

Varios factores determinan la caída de algunas divisas emergentes fuertes frente al dólar alcista. El hecho de que la Reserva Federal de EE. UU. elevó las tasas de interés para evitar la inflación es uno de los puntos principales que explican la fortaleza general del dólar.

Eswar Prasad, profesor de la Universidad de Cornell e investigador principal de la Institución Brookings, explica que alrededor del 60 % de las reservas de divisas de muchos bancos centrales se invierten en activos dolarizados. Por otra parte, en general, los contratos de compraventa de materias primas se fijan y liquidan en dólares, incluido el petróleo.
